HSC’s Adult Sailing Program is designed for adults who have little or no knowledge about sailing, teaching them everything that they will need to know to go sailing on their own, buy their own boat, or crew on one of our Member’s racing sailboats.
Rigging, sail theory, crew positions, knot tying, and teamwork are just some of the topics covered in our three week courses. The courses combine classroom instruction with on-the-water practice. All classes are taught by well-qualified sailing instructors and are designed to build skills and confidence in a safe and encouraging environment.
Hoover Adult Sailing Classes are a chance to meet new friends, make sailing connections, and learn skills that will keep you sailing for the rest of your life.
In the Beginner Class, students will learn rigging and basic boat handling (maneuvering, sail trim and capsize recovery), simple course sailing, seamanship and rules of the road. The course is designed as a way for new sailors to learn at a comfortable pace with expert instruction in a team-oriented environment. Sailors will be paired with another student and sail in our well maintained fleet of Club 420s or Club FJs for the 3 week class. By the end of the session, all students will be able to rig one of our club owned boats, launch, set up and get away from the dock, sail anywhere on the lake, retrieve and derig their boats successfully.
Sail My Boat
In this class, Club Members can learn to sail their own boats in an instructional format. Learn from our Club experts how to properly rig and tune your boat, set up for optimal speed and point on the water, run the spinnaker with ease and learn advanced boat handling topics like proper sail trim, body positioning, weight placement, tiller use, roll tacking and gybing and boat speed and basic racing. You’ll be paired up with students from the Intermediate class, which is a great networking opportunity for you to find teammates to sail with you for the rest of the season. This popular class is space limited, so sign up early.
Schedule and Enrollment
We run four three-week sessions for our beginner and intermediate classes and two-six week sessions of advanced sailing. All of our beginner and intermediate adult sessions cost $195 and run 6-9 pm Monday and Thursday evenings, weather permitting. The advanced session also runs $195 per session but takes place Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm. If weather cancels a class, it will be made up on either a Tuesday or Friday evening within the three week block of classes.
What to Bring
Sailors are expected to provide their own life jackets and close-toed, non-marking shoes
