Adult Sailing Classes
All 2020 adult sailing sessions are full and CLOSED to new enrollment.
Learn to Sail
Our Adult Sailing Program is great for adults who have little or no knowledge about sailing. From rigging and sail theory to knot tying, we’ll teach teaching you everything you need to know to go sailing on your own, buy your own boat, or crew for one of our members.
The courses are taught by qualified sailing instructors and combine classroom instruction with on-the-water practice. You must provide your own life jackets and close-toed, non-marking shoes.
Jamie Jones, Program Director
Adult Beginner Sailing
In the Beginner Class, you will learn rigging and basic boat handling, simple course sailing, seamanship and rules of the road. You’ll pair up and get the opportunity to skipper and crew in our club 420s, learning through both classroom lecture and on the-water sailing.
This course is great for brand new sailors, or big boat sailors looking to broaden their sailing experience. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to rig one of our club owned boats, launch, set up and get away from the dock, sail anywhere on the lake, retrieve and derig the boats successfully.
Adult Advanced Sailing
If you’ve completed the Intermediate class but want more time on the water before buying your own boat, come sailing in our Advanced Sailing Course. We’ll expand on the topics taught in the Intermediate class and cater the lesson plan to the your needs. By the end of this class, you’ll be ready for boat ownership! This class will take place in Hoover’s fleet of Flying Scots, Interlakes and Thistles.
Intermediate & Sail My Boat
In the Intermediate Class, you’ll expand on the skills you learned in the Beginner class, this time in larger boats. Enjoy learning the finer points of sailing in Club owned Flying Scots, Interlakes, Windmills or Thistles. Spinnaker flying, advanced boat handling and basic racing.
This class is paired with the Sail my Boat class to cover advanced boat handling topics like spinnaker flying, proper sail trim, body positioning and weight placement, roll tacking and gybing, boat speed and basic racing.
Sail My Boat
In this class, Club Members can learn to sail their own boats in an instructional format. Learn how to properly rig and tune your boat, set up for optimal speed and point on the water, advanced boat handling techniques. You’ll be paired up with students from the Intermediate class, which is a great networking opportunity for you to find teammates to sail with for the rest of the season. This popular class is space limited, so sign up early.
