Laser Therapy All Winter Long

Lisa KreischerFleet News, Hoover Sailing Club, Leadline

Just a quick shout out to Past Commodore Steve Lavender (Thistle 3893/Laser) for leading weekly therapy sessions all winter long for members of a group of sailors who just can’t get enough sailing during the regular season.  (In the rest of the sailing world it’s called frostbiting.)  The merry band of sailors call themselves Sail-Aholics in Lasers, S.A.i.L.  for short.  They range in age from teens to octogenarians.   This year they sailed almost every week after Docks Out until in March when the weather made the water too “hard” to sail, i.e., ice.

He sends out a weekly email invitations to over 90 recipients describing if the weather conditions are suitable, i.e., fit the safe-to-sail formula which is Temperature/wind speed should be >= 3.5.  After each therapy session Steve tallies the results, re-writes a song or poem and reports to the group how the day went.  He is truly dedicated, as are the S.A.i.L. participants and the club members who volunteer to be Race Committee.  There can be as many as 16 sailors racing.   If you want to join them contact Steve @ lavender.1@osu.edu.

A testimony to their dedication is that as recently as March 10, Steve wrote to the S.A.i.L. Participants and Followers

“As we drove across the bridge on Sunday we could see that the ice was gone from the east side of the lake.   But by the time we splashed in half a dozen dock sections the thin ice was nearly gone. “

Here’s a sample of his weekly song re-writing skills.

Frostbite Rhapsody- sailing remix (to the tune of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen)

Is this the real life?  Is this just fantasy?
Sailing in January, My escape from reality.
Open your eyes, look up to the sky’s for breeze
I had a slow start, I need no sympathy
It’s easy come, easy go, sailing high, sailing low
Any way the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me, to me.

It’s time, to tack again
But I found a hole instead, now this race is really dead!
Come on, this race had just begun!
And now I’ve gone and thrown it all away!
It’s true, oooh ooh
Didn’t want to be that guy!
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow, carry on, carry on
Only the beer really matters

But wait, my time has come
Send shivers down my spine, Just keep hoping all the time
Goodbye everybody, I’ve got to go
Gonna leave you all behind and breeze right through!
It’s true, oooh ooh
I don’t wanna jibe,
But with this puff I think I’ll pass them all!

I see a little puff from the land
Hanging loose, hanging loose, can I do the fandango?
Focus on the race please, very very exciting to me
(Bizarro) Bizarro (Bizarro) Bizarro Bizarro Magnifico Magnifico

But I’m just a poor boy on a winter sailing spree
He’s just a poor boy getting his therapy
Saved by puff a puff from this monstrosity
Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?
Bismillah! We will not let you go
(Let me go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go
(Let me go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go
(Let me go) Will not let you go
(Let me go) Will not let you go
(never, never, never, never let me go) Ah
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
(Oh, drama mia, drama mia) Drama mia, let me go
Oh what has therapy included for me, for me, for me!

So you think you can cover me and make me cry
So you think you can starboard me and make me jibe
Oh maybe, I can get out of this maybe
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here!

(Ooh)
(Ooh, yeah, ooh, yeah)
This therapy matters, anyone can see
This therapy matters
This therapy matters to me
Any way the wind blows
