Fall High School Sailing

High School Sailing is one of the normal things we have been able to do this fall, with some limitations… We’ve hosted 4 events at the lake so far this fall, all socially distanced with masks on while on shore of course! We’ve invited our new friends from Leatherlips’ HS programming over to join us and we’re having a blast making friends and sailing fast! The usual suspects are doing very well this fall: Olentangy Orange HS, made up of member’s kids (Mason Shaw, Molly Jones, Ben Keller, and Jacob Pennels) have won 2 of our 3 Saturday events. While Olentangy Liberty sailors Emma Friedauer, Will Bruner, Porter Martin and Brady Smith won the Steve Nearing Memorial Regatta at Leatherlips.

New this year is our Friday Night Lights series. These events are geared towards our JV sailors that might be newer to driving. Brady and Porter flipped positions in the boat with the same results: a first at our first ever FNL event! In fact, 7 brand new drivers killed it at that event (in big breeze nonetheless!)

Our fall series (the Buckeye Cup) will end this weekend with the 2nd Leatherlips regatta with yet another Hoover HS Sailing team bringing home the hardware for the year! After 4 events, New Albany and Olentangy Liberty are tied with Orange and North behind them. Thomas Worthington rounds out the top 5, meaning a Hoover sweep for sure!

We’ve had some great racing this fall and have been working hard toward next spring’s championship season. Remember that all of the 2020 championship regattas were postponed to 2021 so we’ll hopefully be hosting our spring State Championship as well as the MISSA East qualifiers in April with at least 5 or 6 of our teams. The last time we hosted, only 2 of our teams were prepared and eligible to sail, so that shows the growth our program has made over the last few years, which is something we couldn’t do without the support of the club and BOG! Come out and watch the group sail during the last couple of weeks of practice…you’ll be amazed by their skills!
