Senior Spotlight: Nadia Reynolds

Jamie JonesHoover Sailing Club, Youth Sailing

Nadia Reynolds really needs no introduction…she’s a founding member of Central Ohio High School Sailing Association (COHSSA) starting her career with us the very first day we put this thing together in the fall of 2015. She’s been the leader of Westerville North HS sailing team ever since; training, recruiting, and being their #1 cheerleader since day one. I can count on one hand the number of times Nadia didn’t come sailing with us (and equally as many times that she gave me grief for canceling practice when conditions didn’t allow sailing!). She has competed in an amazing 37 HS events over her career. What is equally impressive are the results:

  • 2X Buckeye Cup champion
  • 3X Top 3 State’s
  • An astounding 18X finishing in the top 2 in her regattas

And as amazing as the results are on the water, the sportsmanship she displayed over the past six years is even better. Between sets, you’ll regularly find Nadia at the end of the dock cheering on not only her WNHS teammates (and pacing…lots of pacing), but she’d cheer for any and all of her fellow Columbus sailors that were having a good race. I know she takes a little bit of pride when sailors from other Columbus teams do well, and you can always hear it when she cheers them on! I can always count on her to train new sailors or take a sailor that was having a rough time in practice, sail with them and help them improve. She’s one of our Head Instructors in the HSC summer program and is very active on the summer sailing scene, either in the 420 with Cam or in the Interlake or Thistle during club races.

Nadia is graduating from Westerville North High School and has consistently made honor roll all 4 years and is a Global Scholar. She was freshman team captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team and will be taking her talents to the University of Cincinnati in the fall. I bet we see her on the college sailing circuit soon.

Way to go NADIA!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a huge shout out to Nadia’s mom Shilah. This “Kitchen Mama” has been our go-to lunch lady since the beginning, feeding countless sailors at all of the regattas we have hosted the past 6 years. Not only that, but she makes a mean tuna fish sandwich for all of our vegetarian friends and keeps me in line when I buy tuna fish for our vegetarian friends…Thanks, Shilah! You’re the best!
